"Must Haves!"

Whether you're just starting the diet with your child or you're already well into the process, these are what I call "Must Haves!" In fact, I don't actually own them but I'm running out today to purchase them. These come strongly recommended by other Keto Parents!

Let's face it.....Heavy Whipping Cream is probably not that yummy! But, add a little sugar-free chocolate flavoring from Bickford Flavors (www.bickfordflavors.com), a little Stevia or Sweet-N-Low, whip and "WahLah!" A yummy whipped cream treat.

The key to every thing you make with the diet it making sure your child eats every gram. This frother is an easy way to whip small portions of cream and not lose grams. The tiny scrapers are great to help you scrape out every last drop!!

I've thought that using my fingers was the most accurate way to scrape out every last bit, but ya know what......yuck. I'm buying these today. I found the frother at Target for $25 but they have a less expensive one for $10. The mini spatulas can be found anywhere and range from $7-$10 for 2.

Be Prepared

I sought some advice on this subject from many parents involved in the Keto Yahoo group. I've come to the conclusion that "Being Prepared" for the stressful times that come with the diet is individual. There is not one answer for everyone.

I think as a Keto Parent we should sit down and write out the different scenarios that we consider an "emergency" situation for our Keto Kid. Next, write out the way you would handle each scenario. Just a little planning ahead might make those really freaky/stressful moments a little easier. Remember to always run your plan, medicine choices and dosages by your dietician and neurologist. Trying to get approval during an emergency is impossible.

Here is a few of my "Emergency" Situations & how I plan to handle them. Most we have already faced and my list helped me a ton. I didn't have to freak out looking for stuff or worrying about dosages. I didn't include phone numbers of physicians/dieticians on this list because it's the internet. But those are key on your list.

1. Illness
a. Ibuprofen (adult 1 tablet), Diabetic Tussin (1 tsp.)
b. Get plenty of fresh air when croupy
c. Humidifier
d. Notice subtle changes, take notes.
e. Watch for Carpal Pedal Spasms (flu)
f. Get plenty of fluids. Monitor closely.
g. Refusal to eat - Get favorites. Call Dietician if necessary.
h. Always keep acceptable medication list with Keto Binder & take to the Pharmacy.
(Your dietician should give you a list of acceptable meds with their carb numbers that you can take to your Pediatrician as well as the Pharmacist. This is key. Never Ever be timid about asking your Pharmacist about carb/sugars in meds. A good relationship with a good pharmacist is essential!)

2. Seizure
a. Time it
b. Bulb Syringe (Emergency Prep kit in car and at home in pantry)
c. Diastat -20 mg after 7 minutes
d. Hospital Protocol Letter in Car/Home Emergency Kits

3. Too Ketotic
a. Small glass of apple juice
b. Take Ketones
c. Page Dietician

Poetry

I read this poem that was circulating on the Ketogenic Yahoo Group. I loved it and hope you will too.

HEAVEN'S VERY SPECIAL CHILD

A meeting was held quite far from Earth!
It's time again for another birth.
Said the Angels to the LORD above,
This Special Child will need much love.

His progress may be very slow,
Accomplishments he may not show.
And he'll require extra care
From the folks he meets down there.

He may not run or laugh or play,
His thoughts may seem quite far away,
In many ways he won't adapt,
And he'll be known as handicapped.

So let's be careful where he's sent,
We want his life to be content.
Please LORD, find the parents who
Will do a special job for you.

They will not realize right away
The leading role they're asked to play,
But with this child sent from above
Comes stronger faith and richer love.

And soon they'll know the privilege given
In caring for their gift from Heaven.
Their precious charge, so meek and mild,
Is HEAVEN'S VERY SPECIAL CHILD.
